Firstly, tear or cut the bread into bite-sized chunks. Set aside.
Use the butter to grease a large, rectangular ceramic or glass baking dish (33cm x 23cm)
Arrange the stale bread into layers in the baking dish with the sultanas.
Whisk together in a large bowl all remaining ingredients. Pour mixture over the bread and sultanas, being sure to soak every piece of bread.
Allow to stand for 10 mins to let the mixture absorb into the bread (optional).
Sprinkle the bread and butter pudding with a little sugar and bake in the oven for Bake in a 350°F or 180°C for 30-40 minutes until the top is browned and crisp.
